Thailand GM2000 – DAC202 Part II

August 31st, 2010 admin No comments

Thank you GM2000 Chief Editor Thanee Modsa-nga for written this excellent 2 parts detail review!
Weiss DAC202  - the non-compromise DAC for computer playback Part: IPart: II

Part: I: Review focuses on the general technology background and the performances using DAC202 as an external DAC. He mentioned “

New Standard for Sound Quality….This is what I defined that DAC202 has set up a new standard of what we call ” A GOOD SOUND ” for every audiophile to be listen to for upgrading their capability….DAC202 is one of the best external DAC that I have auditioned in my life!…”

Part: II: Thanee compared using a HiFace USB to Coaxial connection and the Weiss internal firewire connection with internal master clock. He likes the firewire connection much more and describe it as ”…. The sound from firewire port is smoother, fuller and more condense as you watch high def 1080p compares to 720p….”. He also shares experiences to use both PC and Mac platforms, which are both supported by Weiss. Everyone who knows Weiss background in professional recording market will be interested the quality of headphone monitoring. Modsagna uses a Sennheise HD800 as reference.

Once again thank you Thanee Modsagna for an unusual Part: IPart: II reviews on GM2000 magazine, and great to have you as a Weiss DAC202 happy user.

Thailand Audiophile magazine interview

August 29th, 2010 admin No comments

Thank you very much Tumnoon Prateepichinda for the interview and the dinner time. I am very glad that the BAV 2010 event gave us a very good opportunity to show Bangkok audiophiles about Weiss products performances in demo and events. Thailand becomes a very successful region for Weiss and CAS development. I believe audio technologies have been going on as part of the computer world, but there are places which we need to connect dots together. Thank you for your hard work.

Here is Tumnoon Prateepichinda very detail Weiss DAC202 review.

Thailand Audiophile – DAC202

August 29th, 2010 admin No comments

Thanks so much for Tumnoon Prateepichinda to write such a nice review on Weiss DAC202. He mentioned “One knob to rule them all” is very suitable description to DAC202 with its rotary and press switch for many great features.  The TRSP transparency test with the supplied WAV files can easily test if your computer is performing correct to send transparent data to DAC202. The knob controls volume -60dB to 0dB Max. (Various output level from 1.06v, 2.12v, 4.15v & 8.15v). Digital inputs includes all kinds from AES, SPDIF, Toslink & Firewire.

Thailand BAV Events

August 29th, 2010 admin No comments

During the Thailand BAV show, we are invited to host few events.

(1) Live Recording Event. We setup one live Jazz piano recording and do live and playback. The recording setup is minimal at 24bit/192kHz. A stereo XY microphone plug directly to Weiss Firewire ADC2 as recording directly to Macbook Pro 17″. We playback audio with Weiss DAC202 to ATT202 as preamp, directly to ATC SCM100ASL active speakers. The most amazing moment was playing back the recorded materials, the pianist played live together as piano duo. We may later released this live recording as free hi-res samples.

(2) Computer Audio Seminar – This is a 2 hours event. Thanks so much for Tumnoon Prateepichinda to host this event with me with his professional inputs. We discussed various topics regarding computer as source. The major idea is always when 99.8% of recording are made inside a computer, there is no reason why using computer playback is inferior. Moreover, we have gone above 16bit/44.1kHz for more than a decade, it should be time to move on.

(3) Format War – Thank you Dr. Krailerk and the vinyl group attendees. During the first section, each of the vinyl and digital groups playback 2 songs with male and female vocal. We use entirely different styles and music, so everyone enjoyed both playback nicely. The second section was more interestingly that we used vinyl as source, comparing direct vinyl playback and with adding Weiss ADC2/DAC202 layer of analogue to digital / digital to analogue conversion. It is not a fair comparison and no conclusion whatsoever on the format war theme, but it gave everyone a great comparison between the cable and added layer on AD/DA. We started vinyl playback and after few minutes I calibrated the Weiss ADC2 input, at that moment the music was mute. I called off the playback and told everyone the setup was wrong that what they heard in last few minutes were actually vinyl went through the Weiss ADC2/DAC202. They were quite amazed and requested few more comparisons until we were rushed to pack up and leave to airport. Next time I hope we can also demonstrate record the vinyl playback on computer and playback for comparison. We already have some customers who use Weiss ADC2 to store their vinyl in 24bit/192kHz as digital archives.

Thailand BAV2010

August 29th, 2010 admin No comments

We joined BAV Show in Bangkok with Weiss Authorized Resellers DicoveryHiFi. It was very nice to meet with Thanee Modsaga from GM2000 magazine and Tumnoon Prateepchinda from Audiophile/Videophile magazine. Both of the audio magazine top writers and chief editors love the Weiss DAC202 so much. It is our honor for them to write such a great reviews. We are looking forward for Thanee 2nd half review on DAC202 using computer as source with hi-res materials.

It is worth to mention the demonstration setup is extremely nice sounding, and that was exactly what we have in our mastering studio!

Weiss DAC202 – HiFi Review Part1

August 12th, 2010 admin No comments

Thank you very much HiFi Review to spend time review Weiss DAC202. We learnt from Thailand audiophile magazine GM2000 to have Weiss DAC202 review in 2 separate parts because Weiss DAC202 packs more features than usual with more different digital connections. Moreover, we have been used this DAC202 long enough, we understand it so well that it takes a long time to burn in. The Part 1 review was written when the DAC202 was just landed Hong Kong. It is very favorable to us that HiFi Review editor Sam Ho allows us to have the second part and let it run in for another few weeks. Yesterday, we went HiFi Review audition room with our full set of CAS setup

Macbook Pro 17″ Core i5 -> Amarra 2.0 & iTunes -> Neo d+ Firewire -> Weiss DAC202

iPAD remote control with yTrack application.

Last month reviewer Megan said compare to higher price range DACs EMM Lab / MSB DACs, the DAC202 does not get any favor. We are excited to see their comments on Part 02. The more products we sold and received comments from Asia region customers, we are knowing this DAC202 more everyday. From the BAV event we did 2 weeks ago, the combination of Weiss ADC2 & DAC202 is so transparent that the vinyl lovers in bangkok cannot detect if the source is direct vinyl or passed through AD/DA layer.

Personally I really would like to congratulate Daniel, Samuel Groner who in charged the analogue output stages, and the whole Weiss team.

Taiwan TAA Show 2010

August 10th, 2010 admin No comments

The Taiwan show is very different than Hong Kong and many other places. Although this is the first time I attend TAA show, I was surprised to see how well they blend the art / design form into audio exhibition. I think there are many new areas we should learn from this show. Many real flowers, trees, plants, stones, wood and sculptures are used to decorate the exhibition space.

And this gave me a new thought and feeling about the current audiophile HiFi market and direction for tomorrow.
